UOTreasures - In depth
The following is an interview with Bob, owner of UOTreasures, on May 2nd, 2007:
How long have you been doing this? Did you start selling casually or has it always been a full time business?
We’ve been doing this for almost 10 years (1998) – one of the oldest sites out there. We have been doing it full time since 2000.
What gave you the idea to start this type of business? Did you use to be a gamer, maybe even a buyer or did is there some other story behind your entry into this market?
I used to buy and sell sportscards on ebay. I was also an avid player of Ultima Online. I put the two together and the rest is history J. Ultima Online has always been my favorite game – and I still log on and adventure when time permits.
Did you come across any strange customers or business deals? Can you share one of the more weird experiences as a currency seller?
Once the “Make a Wish†foundation approached me about purchasing a castle. I think this is fascinating, out of all of the wishes this person could make, they wanted a house in an online world. I think that speaks volumes about the power of these games.
What was the largest currency amount a customer has ever bought?
At one time, a couple thousand.
How about the customers that are not just strange, but really fraudulent – how do you deal with those and is it a big problem?
It used to be a really big problem, but we have become good at detecting it early. We request phone numbers from all first time buyers and track IPs as well. If the IP, phone number or anything else doesn’t mesh – we refund the order.
Can you explain why players in the US usually need to pay more for World of Warcraft gold than those in Europe?
Blizzard is much more aggressive in their banning of US sellers than they are in Euro. Nobody seems to know the reason why this is, but that is the reality.
Are you able to expand on any future plans of your company for this competitive market? Any particular goals or predictions you can share?
Well, as new games come down the pipeline we will add items from those games. Over time we’ve had websites for over 30 different games.
Are you playing MMORPGs yourself? If so, what game do you play and for how much would you sell your main character :) ?
Just Ultima Online at the moment – the other three dimensional games make me nauseous. I would never sell my main character – he is a part of me now.
Thank you very much for taking the time to answer our questions!
